APR OF

Education Department,

Hongkong, 16th. February, 1901,

Acting on your suggestion, I have

ascertained what the recommendations of the Salaries

Committee were with regard to the salaries of the Head-

mistress and the Assistant Headmistress of the Belilios

Public School. The Colonial Treasurer informs me that they

are as follows.-

1900.

1901.

1902.

Headmistress

$150 $165

$180

Assistant, Head- mistress

$100

$115

$130.

There will be no house allowance, but exchange compensa-

tion, which at present amounts to about 22 per cent of

the salary will be drawn.

2.

According to the above scale it

would hardly be possible to offer the new European Assist-

ant teacher at the Belilios Public School more than say

880 a month rising by annual increments of $15 a month

to $110.

3.

I suggested this rate of pay to Mrs.

Bateman and she tells me that the lowest rate at which

Mrs. Gillanders who keeps a boarding house on the Calme

Road, takes boarders, is $90 a month, and that that is

about

the Honourable

J. H. Stewart-Lockhart,C.M.G.,

Colonial Secretary.
